All About Montessori High Schools

The first Montessori school was created in 1907 by Dr. Maria Montessori, the first female physician in Italy. Dr. Montessori took fifty desolate, poverty stricken children off the streets and put them in her children's house. Once there, she applied her educational philosophies with amazing results. Her educational philosophy was so successful and effective, that there are Montessori schools all over the world that still subscribe to Dr. Montessori's original philosophies these days.

** Children's Education Tip ** On Children's Learning Problems... Some symptoms are: (1)Short attention span, (2)Difficulty following directions, (3)Can't discriminate between letters, numbers or sounds, (4)Poor reading and/or writing, (5)Difficulty with sequencing, and (6)Problems with coordination.

Dr. Montessori believed that it is inborn in children to learn when placed in a nurturing and supportive environment. This belief is still going strong at modern Montessori schools today. Montessori schools teach children by allowing them to create and experience .

These educational philosophies are similarly applied in Montessori high schools. There are three hour work periods, as well as groupings of children in three-year age groups. This enables the younger children to learn from the older ones, and the older children to take on a mentor role and learn the values of teaching and nurturing their younger peers.

At Montessori high schools, the curriculum focuses on preparing children for the outside world they will experience upon graduation. This is achieved through placing emphasis on teaching practical and traditional skills. Just like in a Montessori elementary school, there is no corrections made to your child's work. Your child's work will be accepted and respected as it is, and if there are areas where your child is having difficulty, they will be addressed using time-tested teaching methods that don't involve corrective practices.

** Children's Education Tip ** Setting a routine and discipline for your child is extremely important. Get them to practise good study habits and self-discipline. Fix a set time for daily home study and to do their homework. Make sure the room is well-lit and conducive for studying. Have a good chair with good back support, and supply them all the necessary pencils, rulers, erasers, and a drinking bottle. Encourage them to take frequent breaks after every half hour of work.

The high school student experiences freedom of education, that is, he or she will be taught in a Renaissance method where any subject of choice can be studied at any time. Of course, your child will be exposed to and taught various traditional subjects like art, history, geography, math, science, language, and literature.

The whole objective of Montessori high schools is to develop teenagers into responsible and well-educated individuals who are ready for adult life. If you think a Montessori high school is right for your child, schedule an initial consultation. You can learn more about the Montessori philosophy as well as what your child's day would be like. You will also be educated on things like tuition costs.
