All About Montessori Day Care

You may have come across "Montessori" very often, but perhaps you are not entirely certain about the philosophy behind the term. Understanding the Montessori educational philosophy is the first step to deciding whether it is the right program for your child.

** Children's Education Tip ** Here is an idea to encourage your child to practise writing… when you are writing your grocery list or writing a simple card to your parents, get her to write them or copy them for you. It will get her started on holding and using the pencil. And, of course, recognizing and writing words.

The Montessori teaching method was developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, Italy's first female physician, in 1907. Dr. Montessori was the director of a casa dei bambini, or children's house. She took poor orphans off the street and educated them using her own methods in this house. Her progress was so amazing that it attracted attention from all over. She believed that when put in a supportive and nurturing environment, children will naturally learn and teach one another. The focus of a Montessori education is on experiencing, creating and doing.

Besides Montessori schools, there are also Montessori day care centers meant for children who are too young to attend elementary school. These Montessori day care centers usually accept children between six weeks of age and elementary school age. At these child care centers, your child's intellectual abilities will be nurtured and he or she will be encouraged to create, experience, and interact with the world around them as well as other children.

Nutritious meals and snacks are normally provided as part of the Montessori day care center programs. The curriculum also include field trips and holiday themed activities. Because the Montessori method is so focused on what children naturally need to learn and thrive, there's no better child care facility to enrol your child in than a Montessori one!

** Children's Education Tip ** On Children's Learning Problems... Some symptoms are: (1)Short attention span, (2)Difficulty following directions, (3)Can't discriminate between letters, numbers or sounds, (4)Poor reading and/or writing, (5)Difficulty with sequencing, and (6)Problems with coordination.

It is a natural decision for many parents to enroll their children in a Montessori elementary school after having them in a Montessori day care. This is a natural progression and will strengthen and reinforce the skills that the children have learned while in day care.

What about the cost of a Montessori day care? It depends on several factors. Because these facilities are privately owned, costs will vary depending on such issues as your location, the age of your child, and the policies of the individual facility. In addition to the monthly fee, a registration fee is usually imposed.
